The 21st Century Skills movement is here to prepare our students for success in school, career, citizenship, and life. In order to achieve success, the “Framework for 21st Century Learning” was created, focusing on the most important skills needed for K-12 education. They became known as the “Four Cs”: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

Students and teachers were given a new Nexus tablet to explore the powerful ways these devices can be used to support student engagement and incorporate the 4Cs into their teaching practice.

While this is exciting for our students and technology is at the center of all of our lives, we are dedicated to helping students succeed and stay safe in a world of media and technology. Learning how to use media and technology is an important skill for life and learning in the 21st Century.

This year when your child comes to the LRC, they will be introduced to a new LCR Curriculum Framework. The framework serves as a curriculum guide for Learning Resource Centers (LRC) in District 59 as the LRC shifts to a focus on Information Literacy. Rather than emphasizing technology skills and integration specifically, the use of technology tools will be embedded across the curriculum and in all contexts. Students and staff in the LRC will use all available tools and resources, both digital and analog, in promoting Information Literacy, the love of reading, digital citizenship and S.T.E.A.M.

With all this information available online, the focus on curriculum will go from teaching facts and content to teaching skills using literacy. Students will learn how to validate information, synthesize information, leverage information, communicate information, collaborate with information, and problem solve with information.
